The cover illustration this year has been produced by
hand by Artist and Printmaker Freda Davis in the Blue
Ball Press studio.
Snow Flurries
It is a sugar lift copper etching, which
means that the trees were painted onto the plate in a
sugar based ink, and the plate coated with wax; then the
plate is immersed in warm water to dissolve the sugar
ink, and the trees are thus exposed. after this a resin
powder is applied to coat the plate, which is heated to
fuse it to the copper. Then the plate is submerged in
an acid tray, which eats into the exposed metal, leaving
a rough surface.
After the plate is cleaned of all substances it can then
be inked and wiped clean. the ink adheres to the rough
surfaces. The plate is trhen covered with dampened paper
and taken through the press to produce the printed image.
Each print is produced by inking and wiping the plate
and rolling through the press.
Freda chose this print because it expresses
the wintry woods and the way snow clings to beech trunks.
The print is called 'Snow Flurries.'
Freda trained in printmaking at West Yorkshire Print
Workshop, and are currently members of Artworks
Community Interest Company in Halifax.
